Chapter 62

The winter months passed, bringing a quiet, profound sense of stability and immense joy to our lives. The legal nightmare was entirely behind us, locked away in federal indictments and corporate ruin. Sovereign Physical Therapy thrived, expanding our staff to accommodate the massive influx of new patients, and Sarah was promoted to clinical director to handle the overwhelming demand.
As my pregnancy progressed, my focus naturally shifted from the battlefield of corporate healthcare to the deeply sacred, beautiful anticipation of new life.
It was a bright, crisp morning in early March. I was at home in the brownstone, standing in the beautifully decorated nursery. The room was painted a soft, calming sage green, filled with warm sunlight, soft blankets, and the profound, undeniable promise of safety.
I traced my fingers over the edge of the smooth wooden crib, feeling a deep, abiding sense of peace. I had fought a war to ensure this room would be a sanctuary, completely untouched by the toxic manipulation I had endured as a child.
Suddenly, a sharp, incredibly intense contraction gripped my lower abdomen. I gasped, leaning heavily against the crib, my hand instinctively dropping to my stomach.
"Thomas!" I called out, my voice tight with a mixture of pain and sudden, terrifying excitement.
Thomas rushed into the nursery, his engineering mind instantly shifting into emergency protocols. He saw my face, saw me gripping the crib, and he knew instantly.
"It's time," Thomas breathed, rushing over to support my weight.
"It's time," I nodded, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the contraction slowly faded.

We had practiced the route to the hospital a dozen times. Thomas grabbed the pre-packed bag by the front door, guided me carefully to the car, and drove with a calm, focused precision that anchored me completely through the escalating waves of pain.
I wasn't afraid. For the first time in my entire life, I was facing a monumental, life-altering challenge without an ounce of fear. I was completely surrounded by love, supported by a partner who viewed me as an equal, and anchored by a strength I had forged entirely on my own.
