Chapter 60

The collapse of Helena’s legal assault was instantaneous and absolutely devastating to her empire. The moment Judge Hawthorne threatened a federal criminal investigation, the expensive litigators from Harrison and Associates literally backed away from the table, desperate to distance their firm from the radioactive fallout of OmniCare’s extortion plot.
I stood up slowly, looking across the mahogany table at my mother.
Helena was completely rigid. The color had entirely drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow and fragile. The untouchable, sovereign power she had wielded for decades was suddenly, violently shattered.
"Maya," Helena whispered, her voice trembling with a frantic, desperate realization. "You stole those emails. This is a setup."
"It's over, Helena," I said, my voice calm, steady, and completely devoid of any anger. I didn't need to yell. The truth was loud enough. "You thought you could destroy my sanctuary, but you only destroyed yourself. OmniCare is going to burn, and you are going to federal prison."
I didn't wait for her to respond. I turned around and walked out of the judge’s chambers, flanked by Thomas and David.
When we stepped through the heavy oak doors and back into the grand marble hallway of the courthouse, I finally let out a long, shuddering breath. The suffocating weight I had been carrying for weeks entirely evaporated, replaced by the brilliant, undeniable lightness of absolute freedom.
"You did it, Maya," Thomas smiled, pulling me into a massive, protective hug right in the middle of the courthouse. "You beat them completely."
"We beat them," I corrected, resting my head against his chest and listening to his strong, steady heartbeat.

"The U.S. Attorney will likely issue arrest warrants for Helena and Caldwell by the end of the week," David noted, checking his phone. "OmniCare’s board of directors will panic. They will fire Helena immediately to try and save their stock prices. She is going to lose absolutely everything."
"She made her choices," I replied softly, stepping back and linking my hand with Thomas's. "I have a clinic to run."
