Chapter 11

The tension that had been quietly building finally snapped on a rainy Tuesday evening. The clinic had closed late, and the parking lot was dark, slick with rain, and mostly empty. I said goodbye to Sarah, locked the heavy glass doors of the facility, and pulled my coat tight against the bitter autumn chill, walking briskly toward my sedan.
I unlocked the car, the headlights flashing brightly. As I reached for the door handle, a figure stepped out from the deep shadows between two parked vans, completely blocking my path.
"You think you can just ignore me, Sophia?" Emily hissed, her voice ragged and furious.
She looked terrible, soaked by the rain, her eyes wide with a manic, unhinged energy. She smelled faintly of cheap alcohol and stale smoke.
"Emily, step away from my car," I commanded, my voice projecting loud and clear across the empty lot. I immediately reached into my pocket, my thumb hovering over the emergency dial button on my phone.
"You owe me!" Emily screamed, stepping closer, her fists clenched. "Dad is rotting in prison, Mom is living in a shoebox, and I have absolutely nothing! You ruined our family, and you're sitting here with your perfect little life! Give me your purse!"
She lunged forward, her hand grasping wildly for the leather strap of my bag. I stepped back, my adrenaline spiking, preparing to physically defend myself.
"Hey! Back the hell away from her!" a deep, furious voice roared across the asphalt.
Lucas Vance emerged from the gloom. He had just finished his late session and was walking to his own car. He moved with surprising speed despite his heavy knee brace, stepping squarely between Emily and me, turning his broad shoulders into an impenetrable wall.
"Who the hell are you?" Emily shrieked, stumbling back from his imposing presence.
"I'm the guy calling the police," Lucas growled, holding his phone up, the screen already dialing 911. "Unless you turn around and run right now."
Emily looked at Lucas, then at me, her face twisting into a mask of pure, venomous hatred. "This isn't over, Sophia! You hear me? It's never over!"
She turned and sprinted away into the dark, rainy night, her erratic footsteps echoing loudly before fading into the distance.
I stood frozen for a second, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. Lucas ended the call on his phone and turned to face me, his intense hazel eyes filled with deep, protective concern.

"Sophia," Lucas said softly, reaching out to gently touch my shoulder. "Are you okay? Who was that?"
"That," I breathed out, my voice trembling slightly before solidifying into absolute steel, "was my sister. And I am calling the police myself. I have a binder full of evidence, and I am filing a restraining order tonight."
