Chapter 38

The negotiation room in the massive glass skyscraper of Apex Athletic was intimidating, completely designed to make small business owners feel insignificant. But as I sat across the sleek mahogany table from the regional director, Mr. Sterling, I felt absolutely no fear. Lucas sat on my right, a quiet pillar of unshakeable support, and Attorney Davis sat on my left, a lethal legal weapon ready to strike.
"Ms. Vance, we are offering you a highly lucrative buyout," Mr. Sterling said smoothly, adjusting his expensive tie. "Forty percent equity in your clinic for two million dollars, plus the exclusive partnership contract. It is an incredibly generous offer."
"It is a generous offer, Mr. Sterling," I agreed calmly, leaning forward and folding my hands on the table. "But my clinic is not for sale."
Sterling frowned, visibly taken aback. "You are rejecting two million dollars?"
"I am rejecting the surrender of my operational control," I corrected, my voice ringing clear and authoritative. "I named my clinic 'Sovereign' for a very specific reason. Every clinical decision, every hiring protocol, and every patient care standard is dictated by my ethics, not a corporate board's profit margin."
"We need collateral to ensure the quality of the partnership," Sterling argued defensively.
"My flawless track record is your collateral," I countered smoothly. "Here is my counter-proposal. I retain one hundred percent ownership of my clinic. You grant us the exclusive partnership contract. In exchange, Sovereign Physical Therapy will dedicate an entire specialized wing of our expansion exclusively to Apex athletes, guaranteeing them priority booking and customized rehabilitation protocols."
Sterling stared at me, his sharp eyes calculating the risk. "You drive an incredibly hard bargain, Ms. Vance."
"I know the value of what I have built," I said, holding his gaze with absolute confidence.

Sterling looked at the revised contract Attorney Davis slid across the table. He was quiet for a long, agonizing minute before a genuine smile finally broke across his face.
"I respect a founder who refuses to compromise," Sterling said, pulling a gold pen from his pocket. "Let's do business, Ms. Vance."
