Chapter 58

|
The morning of the emergency hearing arrived with a biting, cold wind that swept through the city streets. The federal courthouse was a massive, imposing structure of granite and glass, a monument to the absolute authority of the law. I walked through the grand columns flanked by Thomas and David, my posture perfectly straight, my expression an impenetrable mask of quiet strength.
We were directed to the private chambers of Judge Robert Hawthorne, a seasoned, no-nonsense jurist known for his intense scrutiny of corporate litigation.
When we entered the heavy oak doors of the chambers, Helena was already there.
She sat at a polished mahogany table alongside Richard Caldwell and two highly expensive corporate litigators from Harrison and Associates. Helena looked impeccable in a stark white designer suit, radiating her usual aura of untouchable arrogance. When her eyes met mine, she offered a thin, patronizing smile.
She truly believed she had already won. She believed I was walking into the room to surrender.
We took our seats on the opposite side of the table. The tension in the small room was suffocating.
Judge Hawthorne entered through a private side door, his black robes billowing slightly. He sat heavily in his high-backed leather chair and adjusted his reading glasses. He looked incredibly annoyed.
"Let's get this over with," Judge Hawthorne stated bluntly, opening a thick file folder on his desk. "Counsel for the plaintiff, you have filed an emergency injunction to freeze the operational assets of Sovereign Physical Therapy, citing a ten-million-dollar malpractice claim and the imminent financial collapse of the defendant's business. Make your argument."
Caldwell’s lead attorney stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, the defendant, Maya Vance, is currently facing a massive liability judgment for inflicting catastrophic nerve damage on my client. Her clinic is hemorrhaging patients and bleeding capital. If we do not freeze her assets immediately, she will declare bankruptcy and my client will receive zero compensation for his lifelong paralysis."
Judge Hawthorne didn't look impressed. He turned his sharp gaze toward David.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said. "I received your emergency late-night evidentiary filing. Care to elaborate for the opposing counsel?"

David stood up, unbuttoning his suit jacket. He looked directly at Helena, a predatory smile forming on his lips.
"With pleasure, Your Honor," David began. "The plaintiff's request for an asset freeze should be denied, because the plaintiff is a fraud, the injury is completely fabricated, and this entire lawsuit is a malicious extortion plot orchestrated by OmniCare Solutions."
