Chapter 56

The pressure of the impending emergency hearing was suffocating, but fate delivered a massive, unexpected breakthrough late that evening. Thomas and I were at home, preparing a quiet dinner and trying to distract ourselves from the anxiety of the ticking clock, when my personal cell phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unknown number. I hesitated for a fraction of a second before answering.
"Maya Vance speaking," I said cautiously.
"Mrs. Vance, my name is Dr. Aris Thorne," a deep, slightly trembling voice replied. "You don't know me, but I know what OmniCare Solutions is trying to do to your clinic. I used to own a private rehabilitation center in Chicago. Three years ago, Vanguard Medical Acquisitions orchestrated a hostile takeover. They used a fake malpractice lawsuit to freeze my assets and bankrupt me."
I froze, the wooden spoon in my hand completely still. Thomas saw the shock on my face and immediately walked over, listening closely.
"Dr. Thorne," I breathed, my heart hammering. "Helena Vance ordered the takeover?"
"She did," Thorne confirmed, his voice laced with bitter resentment. "She is ruthless. But she is also arrogant. When they forced me to sign the buyout papers, I managed to access an internal OmniCare server before they revoked my credentials. I downloaded a cache of internal emails between Helena and Richard Caldwell. They discuss their 'litigation strategies' openly. They explicitly outline how to hire actors to pose as injured patients."
"You have documented proof of corporate extortion," I realized, a wave of absolute, terrifying hope rushing over me. "Why didn't you go to the authorities?"
"Because they threatened my family," Thorne whispered heavily. "They said if I ever went public, they would completely destroy my medical license. But I read about your clinic in a medical forum. I saw the fake reviews they are posting about you. I know the playbook. I can't let her destroy another independent practice."
"Dr. Thorne, I have an emergency injunction hearing tomorrow morning at nine," I stated, my voice radiating absolute, commanding clarity. "If you send me those emails tonight, I can submit them to the federal judge. We can expose the entire operation. I swear to you, I have the legal team to protect your identity and tear OmniCare apart."

There was a long, agonizing silence on the line.
"Check your email in five minutes, Mrs. Vance," Thorne finally said. "End her."
