Chapter 37

With the shadow of Eleanor finally banished from our lives, Sovereign Physical Therapy didn't just recover; it experienced an unprecedented explosion of growth. By the time autumn rolled around, the air outside turning crisp and the leaves painting the city in vibrant shades of gold and amber, the clinic was operating at full capacity.
I was sitting in my office reviewing the quarterly financials when Sarah practically sprinted through the door, her face flushed with excitement.
"Maya, you are not going to believe this," Sarah gasped, waving a thick, embossed folder in her hand.
"What is it? Did a patient have a breakthrough?" I asked, setting my pen down.
"Better," Sarah beamed, dropping the folder on my desk. "That is a formal partnership proposal from the Apex Athletic Club. The largest, most exclusive sports and training facility in the state."
I stared at the folder, my jaw dropping slightly. Apex Athletic catered to professional athletes, Olympic hopefuls, and high-net-worth individuals. They were a titan in the fitness industry.
"They want us?" I asked, opening the folder with trembling hands.
"They want you," Sarah corrected proudly. "Their regional director heard about your groundbreaking work with Mr. Henderson's knee, and they noticed our flawless clinic reviews. They want to make Sovereign Physical Therapy their exclusive, official recovery and rehabilitation partner."
I scanned the proposal. The numbers were staggering. It included a massive retainer fee, a guaranteed stream of high-profile athletic referrals, and a budget to completely expand our current facility into the vacant building next door.
"This is life-changing," I whispered, the weight of the opportunity settling over me.
"There's a catch, though," Sarah noted, pointing to the second page. "They want to buy a forty percent equity stake in your clinic. They want partial ownership to secure the brand."

My absolute joy faltered for a fraction of a second. I traced the edge of the paper, thinking about the heavy brass key in my pocket. I had built this sanctuary with my own blood, sweat, and tears.
"No," I said firmly, closing the folder. "I am not selling my sovereignty to anyone."
