Chapter 24

|

The silence in the clinic became thick and electric. I stared down at Lucas, my hands trembling slightly in his warm, steady grip. He didn't pull out a massive, flashy box. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and retrieved a simple, elegant velvet pouch.

"Sophia," Lucas began, his voice thick with raw, undeniable emotion. "When I first met you, I was broken, angry, and entirely lost. You didn't just heal my body. You showed me what absolute, unyielding strength looks like. You taught me how to rebuild."

He opened the pouch, revealing a stunning, understated ring—a brilliant, solitary diamond set in a simple, strong band of brushed platinum. It wasn't ostentatious. It was perfect.

"I know that for a long time, the idea of tying your life to someone else’s was a source of terror for you," Lucas continued, looking directly into my eyes, ensuring I felt the absolute sincerity of his words. "I never want to own you. I never want to restrict you. I want to stand beside you as an equal partner, protecting your peace and celebrating your victories for the rest of our lives. Sophia Vance, will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over my eyelashes. They weren't tears of anxiety or fear; they were the physical manifestation of a heart that was finally, completely full.

I didn't hesitate for a single second. I didn't need to overthink it or protect my boundaries, because Lucas was the man who had helped me build them.

"Yes," I sobbed, dropping to my knees on the hardwood floor so I was directly at eye level with him. "Yes, Lucas. Absolutely, yes."

He let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for a lifetime, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across his face. He slipped the platinum ring onto my finger, the metal cool and solid against my skin. Then, he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a fierce, desperate kiss.

We knelt there on the floor of my new clinic, completely enveloped in each other's arms, surrounded by the physical proof of my resilience. The monsters of my past were entirely gone, permanently locked away in prisons of their own making. In their place, I had found a love that did not demand sacrifices, but offered unwavering support.
