Chapter 52

|

The sterile, glass-walled conference room in David Vance’s downtown law firm offered a commanding view of the city skyline, but my focus was entirely on the massive legal battle unfolding on the mahogany table in front of us. David, Thomas’s older brother and a ruthless corporate litigator, adjusted his glasses as he read through Helena’s fraudulent malpractice filing.

"This is incredibly aggressive, Maya," David stated, his tone professional but laced with genuine concern. "The opposing counsel listed here is Harrison and Associates. They are a massive, highly expensive litigation firm. Helena is using OmniCare’s vast legal budget to completely bury you in paperwork."

"The patient, Arthur Jenkins, is lying," I said firmly, sitting straight in my high-backed leather chair. "I have complete, detailed clinical notes from his single diagnostic visit. There was no spinal adjustment, and there was absolutely no nerve damage when he left my facility."

"Unfortunately, in medical malpractice, clinical notes can be argued in front of a jury as biased documentation," David explained, leaning back. "Helena's lawyers have filed an injunction requesting an immediate freeze on all of Sovereign's business accounts, claiming you are a flight risk who might attempt to hide assets before a judgment."

"Can she do that?" Thomas asked, his jaw tight with anger.

"She can try," David replied. "I will file a counter-motion tomorrow morning to block the asset freeze, but we need undeniable proof that Jenkins is a fraudulent plaintiff. If we can prove he is connected to Helena or OmniCare, the entire lawsuit collapses, and we can pursue them for massive extortion."

"How do we prove it?" I asked. "OmniCare covers their tracks meticulously."

"We investigate Jenkins," Thomas suggested, his engineering mind locking onto the structural weakness of their plan. "If he is faking permanent nerve damage, he has to maintain that lie twenty-four hours a day. He can't walk, he can't drive, he can't go to the gym. If he breaks the act even once, and we catch it, we destroy their entire case."

"I have a contact," David nodded slowly. "A private investigator who specializes in exposing fraudulent insurance claims. I will put him on Arthur Jenkins today. But Maya, you need to prepare yourself. Helena is going to use this lawsuit to wage a psychological war against you. Do not let her see you bleed."

"She won't," I promised, my hand resting protectively over my stomach. "She thinks she is fighting the frightened daughter she used to control. But she is fighting a mother now. And I will not surrender."
