Chapter 54

|

The adrenaline of uncovering the connection between Jenkins and Caldwell carried me through the afternoon, but by the time I arrived home, the physical toll of the relentless stress finally caught up with me. I walked through the front door and immediately felt a sharp, heavy ache in my lower back, accompanied by a wave of profound exhaustion.

Thomas was waiting in the living room. The moment he saw my pale face, he crossed the room and gently guided me to the plush sofa.

"Maya, you need to sit down," Thomas instructed, his voice thick with worry. He grabbed a throw blanket and draped it over my legs. "You are completely exhausted. What happened today?"

"We found the connection," I whispered, leaning my head back against the cushions. "Sarah found a photograph of Jenkins and Caldwell at a country club together. Jenkins is an associate of OmniCare. It's entirely premeditated fraud."

"That is incredible news," Thomas said, though his focus remained entirely on my physical state. He knelt on the floor beside the sofa, taking my hands in his. "David can use that to destroy the lawsuit. But Maya, you have to pace yourself. The baby can feel your stress."

Tears suddenly pricked the corners of my eyes. The stoic, unshakeable armor I wore all day at the clinic finally cracked in the absolute safety of my husband's presence.

"I'm terrified, Thomas," I confessed, my voice breaking slightly. "Not of losing the clinic, but of what she is capable of. Helena doesn't care who she destroys. I fought so hard to build a peaceful life for this baby, and she is trying to turn it into a war zone."

"She won't," Thomas promised, his grip on my hands tightening with absolute, fierce devotion. "She is a bully, Maya. Bullies rely on intimidation, but they shatter the moment you expose their lies to the light. You are not alone in this fight. I am right here. David is building an impenetrable defense. And you are stronger than she will ever be."

I looked into his steady brown eyes, feeling the unconditional love that Helena had never been capable of providing. Thomas was my structural support, the foundation that allowed me to stand tall.

"I know," I whispered, wiping the tear from my cheek and taking a deep, restorative breath. "I just needed a moment to be tired. Tomorrow, we go back on the offensive."
