Chapter 43

|

The following year passed in a beautiful, relentless blur of massive success and profound, unconditional joy. Sovereign Physical Therapy became the premier rehabilitation center in the entire state, and my life with Lucas only grew richer and more deeply connected with every passing day.

It was Thanksgiving morning, exactly two years after I had walked away from Eleanor's toxic estate for the final time.

I stood in the massive kitchen of our home, wearing a comfortable oversized sweater, stirring a pot of fresh cranberry sauce. The house smelled incredibly warm, a mixture of roasting turkey, cinnamon, and pine from the massive wreath Lucas had hung on the front door.

Unlike the agonizing, tense holidays of my youth, where I had to constantly monitor Eleanor's volatile moods and endure brutal, passive-aggressive insults, my home was filled with loud, genuine laughter.

Chloe was sitting at the kitchen island, fiercely debating the rules of a board game with Sarah. Chloe had blossomed entirely. She was in her final year of college, managing the clinic's front desk part-time, and dating a kind, respectful medical student who was currently helping Lucas carve the turkey in the dining room.

"You're cheating, Sarah!" Chloe laughed, throwing a game piece across the granite counter.

"I am strategizing, Chloe, there is a massive legal difference!" Sarah shot back, grinning widely.

I watched them, a deep, overwhelming wave of emotion swelling in my chest. This was what family was actually supposed to look like. It wasn't built on blood obligations, fear, or financial manipulation. It was built on mutual respect, fierce protection, and absolute, unconditional love.

Lucas walked into the kitchen, holding two crystal glasses of wine. He handed one to me, noticing the tears shining in my eyes.

"Hey," Lucas whispered softly, stepping close. "Are you okay?"

"I'm more than okay," I smiled, leaning up to kiss him. "I was just looking at everything we built. It's beautiful, Lucas. Every single piece of it."

"Happy Thanksgiving, Mrs. Vance," Lucas smiled, clinking his glass against mine.

"Happy Thanksgiving," I replied, feeling completely, utterly free.
