Chapter 9 - The Clinic Confrontation

At two o'clock that afternoon, Julian and Meredith’s private security team arrived at the St. Jude Private Maternity Clinic in suburban Evanston. The clinic was an exclusive, discreet facility catering exclusively to Chicago’s wealthiest families, shielded by private gates and tinted glass.

Dr. Richard Sterling, a distant cousin who ran the clinic’s diagnostic imaging department, rushed out of his private office to meet them in the executive foyer. He looked nervous, sweating profusely under the collar of his white lab coat.

“Meredith, Julian, what is the meaning of this unannounced visit?” Dr. Sterling stammered, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. “I have patients in the ultrasound suites; you cannot bring private guards into my clinic!”

Meredith stepped forward, holding up a federal grand jury subpoena signed by the chief judge of the district court. “We are here for the unredacted server logs for the ultrasound image registered to Genevieve Vance on Tuesday afternoon, Richard.”

Dr. Sterling swallowed hard, backing away toward his desk. “Medical records are protected by strict privacy laws, Meredith; I cannot simply hand over patient charts without a formal court hearing!”

Julian slammed his hand onto the desk, his presence towering over the trembling physician. “You took a three-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer from Victoria Vance’s offshore account on Monday morning, Richard.”

The doctor froze, his face losing all color as Julian placed the forensic wire transfer receipt directly before his eyes. “You fabricated an eighteen-week fetal ultrasound by duplicating the file of a legitimate patient from last month and stamping Genevieve’s name on the header.”

Dr. Sterling sank into his leather chair, covering his face with his trembling hands as his professional life crumbled before him. “Victoria threatened to destroy my practice if I didn't help them… She said it was just a temporary legal maneuver to stall a corporate takeover!”

Meredith leaned over the desk, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “You committed medical fraud, perjury, and conspiracy to defraud a sovereign trust, Richard.”

“I’ll sign the confession,” the doctor sobbed, pulling a blank legal affidavit from his drawer. “I’ll provide the original uncorrupted server logs, just please don't let them send me to a federal penitentiary!”

Meredith took the signed confession and the flash drive containing the raw medical data. “You will testify before the grand jury tomorrow morning, Richard, or you will spend the rest of your life in a cell.”
