Chapter 7 - The Midnight Break-In

That night, a violent thunderstorm rolled over Lake Michigan, battering the sprawling Sterling estate with sheets of torrential rain. Inside the darkened mansion, the security feeds on the ground floor flickered intermittently as high-voltage lightning struck nearby transformers.
Down in the subterranean wine cellar beneath the eastern wing, a heavy iron ventilation grate was silently pried open with a crowbar. Two figures dressed in tactical black gear slipped into the room, their faces covered by dark balaclavas.
“Find the primary server room behind the tasting parlor,” a raspy voice whispered through a throat mic. “Victoria said the physical backup hard drive from the garden is stored in the wall safe.”
The intruders navigated the stone corridor with practiced precision, disabling the infrared tripwires using specialized aerosol sprays. They reached the reinforced oak door of the private archive, pulling out an electronic lock-picking device to bypass the biometric scanner.
Suddenly, the overhead industrial floodlights flared to life, illuminating the cellar in blinding, inescapable brilliance. Standing behind a steel security desk twenty feet away was Meredith, holding a cup of steaming tea, accompanied by four armed tactical officers.
“Looking for this?” Meredith asked calmly, lifting the black titanium cylinder from the desk.
The two intruders reached for the holsters beneath their jackets, but the tactical officers racked their shotguns with synchronized, deafening clicks. The intruders froze instantly, raising their gloved hands into the air as they realized they were completely surrounded.
“Drop the weapons, unmask yourselves, and kneel on the stone,” the lead security officer commanded in a booming voice.
The men complied slowly, pulling off their masks to reveal two notorious corporate fixers known for handling wet work for Chicago’s elite. Behind them, stepping out from the hidden wine rack door, Julian appeared holding a digital camcorder recording every second of the encounter.

“These men were hired through an encrypted escrow account tied directly to Genevieve’s personal trust,” Julian stated for the record. “Breaking and entering, armed burglary, and attempted destruction of federal evidence.”
Meredith set her teacup down, looking at the captured mercenaries with quiet authority. “Tell Victoria her little nighttime raid failed, and tell her I will see her in church on Sunday.”
