Chapter 5 - Blood Money and Broken Bonds

The boardroom descended into pin-drop silence as the Sterling lead counsel projected the unsealed Swiss documents onto the large wall displays. Every line of the text confirmed Meredith’s absolute, unassailable legal supremacy over the entire corporate conglomerate.

Victoria’s aristocratic composure cracked for the first time, her face turning the color of curdled cream. “This is a forgery! Marcus Sterling was legally incompetent when he signed those documents in Zurich!”

“Our father was completely sound of mind, Victoria,” Julian spoke up, standing tall beside his sister. “And he was lucid enough to record the entire signing ceremony on video with three independent Swiss judges present.”

Meredith tapped the touch screen on the podium, instantly switching the wall displays to a series of complex forensic banking charts. Red arrows traced millions of dollars flowing through offshore shell entities based in the Cayman Islands and Panama.

“Let’s talk about your liquidity, Victoria,” Meredith said, her voice dropping into a menacing purr. “You claimed yesterday that the Vance Syndicate was prepared to purchase thirty percent of our foreign corporate bonds.”

Genevieve looked at the screen, panic flaring behind her dark eyes as she recognized the names of the dummy corporations. She tried to pull her mother’s sleeve, but Victoria stood paralyzed, staring at her own secret ledgers.

“These accounts show that the Vance Syndicate has been insolvent for fourteen months,” Meredith announced to the stunned board members. “The seventy million dollars you deposited in New York last week was drawn on fraudulent Brazilian agricultural bonds that are currently under federal investigation for counterfeiting.”

Murmurs of shock and outrage rippled through the board members, who quickly pulled their chairs back from the Vance delegation. Victoria gritted her teeth, her manicured nails digging into the edge of the polished mahogany table until they bent.

“You have no proof of these baseless accusations!” Victoria hissed, her voice cracking with desperation. “You’re projecting doctored slides to defame my family’s century-old reputation!”

Meredith smiled serenely, folding her hands over the podium. “The proof isn't just on these slides, Victoria; it’s currently sitting in the email inbox of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.”
