Chapter 14 - The Sterling Reckoning

The federal trial of Victoria Vance and her co-conspirators concluded three months later in the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity as the jury foreman stood to deliver the unanimous verdict on all thirty-seven felony counts.
Victoria Vance was sentenced to forty-five years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Genevieve Vance was sentenced to fifteen years for her direct role in the corporate extortion and medical fraud conspiracies.
As the judge banged his gavel with finality, Julian sat in the front row of the gallery beside Meredith, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over him. The ghosts of their father’s past had finally been laid to rest under the unbreakable weight of justice.
After the court adjourned, Julian and Meredith walked down the grand granite steps of the federal courthouse, surrounded by the afternoon sun. Julian stopped on the plaza, turning to his elder sister with humble sincerity in his eyes.
“Meredith, I spent years thinking I was the leader of this family,” Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. “I was blind, arrogant, and almost let those monsters steal our father’s entire life’s work.”
Meredith smiled warmly, reaching up to adjust her younger brother’s lapel with genuine sisterly affection. “You were trusting, Julian; there is no crime in having a good heart, as long as you learn when to show your teeth.”
“I want to step down as CEO,” Julian said, offering a small, determined nod. “I want to work from the ground up, under your direction, until I truly understand how to protect this empire.”
Meredith shook her head gently, taking his arm as they walked toward their waiting car. “A true leader doesn't run away from the throne, Julian; they learn how to share it with those who bleed for the same name.”

“So what is our next step?” Julian asked, looking at the towering skyscrapers of Chicago glowing in the late afternoon light.
Meredith looked forward with unshakeable confidence. “Our next step is to clean our house, rebuild our foundation, and remind this city what the name Sterling truly represents.”
