Chapter 2 - The Stolen Ledger

The breeze rustling through the ancient magnolia tree carried the sharp scent of damp earth and coming rain. Meredith knelt beside the exposed root system, using a silver trowel to pry open a hidden waterproof titanium cylinder buried two feet beneath the sod.

Julian watched in stunned silence as his sister lifted the heavy container from the ground. He had grown up playing under this very tree, completely oblivious to the secrets resting beneath its shade.

“Father buried this forty-eight hours before his fatal car crash on Lake Shore Drive,” Meredith explained quietly, unscrewing the threaded metal cap. “He knew the Vance family was orchestrating a hostile takeover from the inside using counterfeit European letters of credit.”

Inside the container lay a military-grade encrypted hard drive alongside a handwritten ledger bound in dark leather. Julian opened the first page, recognizing his late father’s bold, angular script.

“Every wire transfer, every offshore shell company, and every bribe paid to our former board members is documented in this book,” Meredith said, looking up at her younger brother. “Father didn’t die of reckless driving in the rain, Julian; his braking system was remotely hacked by someone using Vance proprietary software.”

Julian felt a cold shiver race down his spine, nausea gripping his stomach. He had spent the last eight months wining, dining, and planning a lavish future with the daughter of the woman who orchestrated his father’s murder.

“Genevieve knew this ledger existed,” Julian choked out, his fists clenching until his nails drew blood. “She insisted on moving our wedding preparations to this specific estate because she was searching the grounds for it.”

Meredith stood up, brushing the dirt from her trousers with absolute composure. “She knew the ledger was buried near the garden pavilion, but she didn’t know the exact coordinates.”

A sudden vibration buzzed inside Julian’s coat pocket, breaking the tense silence between them. He pulled out his phone, staring at the incoming urgent notification from the firm’s chief legal counsel.

“Meredith, look at this,” Julian whispered, holding the glowing screen before his sister’s eyes. “Genevieve just filed an emergency petition with the probate court, claiming she is carrying the next legal heir to the Sterling Trust.”
