Chapter 1 - The Mask Slips

The sunlit courtyard fell into a paralyzing, suffocating stillness as the private security detail surrounded Genevieve Vance. Her designer heels clicked erratically against the limestone pavers while she retreated toward the fountain, her hands trembling violently.

“You’re making the biggest mistake of your pathetic life, Julian!” Genevieve shrieked, her voice echoing off the limestone arches. “I am the sole heiress to the Vance international trading empire, and you dare treat me like a common criminal for disciplining a filthy gardener!”

Julian did not offer a single word of defense or sympathy. He merely stepped beside Meredith, extending a clean white handkerchief so his elder sister could wipe the soil from her hands.

Meredith took the linen with calm elegance, her piercing hazel eyes never leaving Genevieve’s contorted face. She slowly untied the faded denim apron, revealing the tailored cashmere blouse underneath.

“You came into my family’s sanctuary thinking wealth was a license to butcher human dignity, Genevieve,” Meredith spoke, her tone terrifyingly quiet. “You believed Julian’s soft heart made this entire dynasty blind to your predatory schemes.”

Two burly guards in dark suits stepped forward, firmly taking Genevieve by her slender arms. Genevieve thrashed against their iron grips, screaming curses that shattered the serene morning air.

“Get your peasant hands off me!” she yelled, her flawless facade completely disintegrating into hysterical venom. “Julian, call off these animals right now, or my mother will liquidate every corporate bond your firm holds in New York!”

Julian raised a single finger, signaling the chief of security to proceed without delay. “Escort Miss Vance off the perimeter, confiscate her electronic gate passes, and change every biometric entry code immediately.”

As Genevieve was dragged toward the wrought-iron gates, a small black metallic device slipped from her designer clutch, clattering onto the stones. Meredith walked over, knelt down, and picked up the high-frequency surveillance bug with her bare fingertips.

Julian stared at the listening device, his face draining of all remaining warmth. “She wasn't just here to play society bride, was she?”

Meredith turned the bug over in her palm, crushing the delicate microchip between her fingers until it snapped. “She was sent here to finish what her family started ten years ago, Julian.”
