Chapter 13 - Desperation on the Cliffside

Three weeks after the arrests at the gala, Genevieve Vance was released on a temporary two-million-dollar medical bail while awaiting trial. Driven by pure, unhinged desperation, she violated her house arrest, cut off her electronic ankle monitor, and stole a vehicle from her family’s impounded garage.

In the dead of night, Genevieve drove frantically toward the Sterling coastal retreat on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. She knew that Victoria had hidden an emergency stash of bearer bonds worth ten million dollars inside an old boathouse safe near the cliff edge.

As she pulled up to the dark, deserted boathouse, the stormy wind whipped through the trees, howling like an enraged beast. Genevieve ran through the rain, kicking open the rotting wooden door and tearing apart the floorboards with a tire iron.

She pulled out the rusted metal lockbox, forcing it open to reveal stacks of waterlogged, worthless counterfeit certificates. Victoria had spent the real money months ago, leaving behind nothing but empty paper promises.

Genevieve screamed in absolute agony, hurling the metal box against the wooden wall as her final hope of escape evaporated into the night. She turned around to run back to her car, only to find Meredith standing in the doorway, illuminated by the headlights of a parked SUV.

Meredith wore a simple black wool coat, her hands tucked inside her pockets, watching Genevieve with deep, sorrowful pity. “It’s over, Genevieve; the state police have closed the highway two miles down the road.”

Genevieve pulled a small switchblade from her pocket, her eyes wild with madness as she took a menacing step toward Meredith. “You took everything from me! My status, my engagement, my future!”

“You never had any of those things, Genevieve,” Meredith said softly, not flinching as the blade flashed in the dark. “You were living an illusion built on stolen blood, and tonight you are finally facing the truth.”

Genevieve looked at the edge of the cliff twenty feet away, where the black waters of Lake Michigan churned violently against the jagged rocks below. For a terrifying second, she contemplated throwing herself into the abyss rather than facing thirty years in a federal prison.

Meredith extended her hand across the rain. “Don’t do it, Genevieve; drop the knife and face your reckoning like a human being.”

Genevieve’s fingers trembled violently as the sound of police sirens echoed through the stormy valley. The blade slipped from her wet palm, clattering harmlessly onto the wet grass as she collapsed into the mud, weeping for the empty life she had chased to her own destruction.
