Chapter 11 - The Projection of Truth

The massive ballroom went completely quiet as Meredith’s clear, commanding voice resonated through the state-of-the-art audio system. She looked out over the sea of Chicago’s elite, her gaze resting directly on Victoria and Genevieve in the front row.

“Tonight, we celebrate fifty years of our family’s enterprise, built on innovation, integrity, and absolute loyalty,” Meredith spoke with solemn grace. “However, tonight is also a night of reckoning for those who believe murder, forgery, and deceit can steal what honor built.”

Victoria’s confident smile began to fade, a sudden wave of unease rippling through her posture. “What is she doing?” Victoria whispered to Genevieve through clenched teeth.

Meredith pressed a wireless controller on the lectern, and the gigantic high-definition projection screens behind the stage lit up. Instead of a corporate retrospective video, the screens displayed the signed medical confession of Dr. Richard Sterling in crisp, undeniable detail.

A collective gasp echoed across the vast ballroom as the doctor’s recorded video deposition began to play with crystal-clear audio. “I, Dr. Richard Sterling, hereby admit under oath that the pregnancy records for Genevieve Vance were entirely fabricated under the direction of Victoria Vance.”

Genevieve’s face turned an ashen shade of grey, her champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering violently on the parquet floor. The surrounding guests stepped back in horror, creating an empty circle around the two exposed women.

Before Victoria could shout or move toward the stage, the screen switched to the decrypted European automotive schematics. The audio recording of Victoria authorizing the tampering of Marcus Sterling’s vehicle filled the ballroom with chilling clarity.

“Ensure the failure occurs on the highway curve,” Victoria’s recorded voice echoed from every speaker, condemning her before every titan of industry she had ever sought to impress.

The entire ballroom erupted into gasps of horror and condemnation. Photographers rushed forward, their flashbulbs blinding the mother and daughter as their web of lies was stripped bare before the world.

Genevieve stumbled backward against a dining table, knocking over crystal centerpieces as the crushing weight of public ruin fell upon her. “Julian! Julian, please, this is a lie!” she screamed across the room in total hysterics.

Julian stood on the stage beside his sister, his face as cold and unyielding as carved marble. “The only lie in this room, Genevieve, was every single word that ever came out of your mouth.”
