Chapter 44 - The Extraction of Truth

|

I slipped out of The Apex through the kitchen service exit, completely invisible to the chaos erupting upstairs. The cold rain had intensified, washing the neon reflections from the slick pavement. I walked rapidly to my secured vehicle, my mind running through complex tactical calculations. Silas had thirty armed men. I had the element of surprise and a righteous fury that made me infinitely more dangerous than a small army.

I sat in the driver's seat, turning on the encrypted comms unit built into the dashboard. I needed to ensure the foundation was still secure before I initiated the final strike.

"Base, this is Alpha. Do you read?" I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady.

A tense beat of static followed, and then Marcus's voice cracked through the speaker. "Alpha, this is Base. We read you loud and clear. Perimeter is absolute green. No movement since the first incursion. How is your status?"

"Target acquired," I replied, stripping off my suit jacket and reaching for the heavy tactical vest in the passenger seat. "The operation commences at 0300 hours. The cargo arrives at Pier 9. I am moving to intercept and neutralize the command structure."

"Sir, thirty men is a suicide run for a solo operator," Marcus warned, his professional tone masking deep concern. "Let me bring a strike team to your location. We can be there in two hours."

"Negative, Marcus," I ordered sharply. "Your only objective is protecting Ellen, Hope, and the residents. If you pull men off the perimeter, you leave them vulnerable. I will handle Silas. Just ensure that when the dust settles, my family is safe."

There was a long pause before Marcus sighed. "Understood, Arthur. Give them hell."

"Always," I promised.

I terminated the connection and spent the next hour meticulously prepping my gear. Extra magazines, flashbangs, breaching charges, and a primary assault rifle. I was not going to arrest Silas. I was going to tear his empire out by the roots, ensuring that no one from this city would ever dare look toward my sanctuary again. I started the engine, the heavy SUV purring to life, and drove toward the dark, sprawling nightmare of the Narrows.
