Chapter 16 - Closing the Ranks

The next forty-eight hours were a whirlwind of aggressive logistical upgrades. I authorized an immediate expenditure of two million dollars to completely overhaul the foundation’s security infrastructure. We brought in a team of highly specialized former military contractors, replacing the standard security guards with men who knew exactly how to handle high-stakes threats.

"The perimeter is now completely locked down," David reported, standing in front of the massive bank of surveillance monitors in the newly renovated command center. "We have thermal imaging, motion-detecting drones, and a dedicated rapid-response team stationed less than fifty yards from the main housing unit. Sterling could send an army, and they wouldn't breach the front lawn."

"Good," I muttered, staring at the screens. "But defensive measures are only half the battle. I need to know where we stand on the offensive front."

My encrypted phone buzzed on the desk. It was the lead forensic accountant I had hired to dismantle Sterling’s empire. I picked it up immediately.

"Tell me you found it."

"We hit the motherlode, Robert," the voice on the other end said, echoing with professional triumph. "Arthur Sterling hasn't just been hiding assets from his wife. He has been systematically defrauding his corporate investors for over five years. We uncovered a massive web of offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands, all tied back to illegal kickbacks from city contracts."

A slow, predatory smile crept across my face.

"Do you have the undeniable proof?" I asked.

"We have bank routing numbers, wire transfer receipts, and digital signatures. It’s an airtight paper trail. If the federal authorities see this, Sterling will be facing a minimum of twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud and tax evasion."

"Compile the dossier," I ordered coldly. "Send one secure, encrypted copy to my private server. Do not release it to the authorities yet. I want to look him in the eye when I take everything away from him."

I hung up the phone, feeling the familiar, intoxicating rush of absolute control. The trap was set, and Arthur Sterling was walking blindly into the jaws of a predator he could not possibly comprehend.
