Chapter 42 - The Neon Trap

|
The Apex was an arrogant display of criminal wealth, a pulsing, neon-drenched nightclub hidden beneath a legitimate high-end restaurant. The bass thumped through the concrete floor like a heavy, irregular heartbeat. I walked past the massive bouncers at the VIP entrance with effortless confidence, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that expertly concealed the suppressed weaponry strapped to my chest and ankle. I looked exactly like the kind of corrupt, wealthy investor that kept places like this in business.
I navigated through the writhing crowd, my eyes scanning the dark, velvet-lined booths. I wasn't looking for a fight in the main room; I was looking for the spider in the center of the web.
I spotted Vance holding court in a raised, glass-enclosed VIP section overlooking the dance floor. He was a sharply dressed, vicious-looking man, surrounded by bodyguards and terrified-looking women. I approached the velvet rope guarding the stairs, locking eyes with the massive security guard standing in my way.
"Private party," the guard grunted, crossing his massive arms.
"Tell Vance that Mr. Black is here to discuss a massive logistical problem regarding the incoming shipment at the Narrows," I said smoothly, my voice carrying an absolute, terrifying authority. "Tell him I represent the buyers, and if he doesn't speak to me in the next sixty seconds, the deal is dead."
The guard hesitated, unnerved by my complete lack of fear, and tapped his earpiece. A moment later, he unhooked the velvet rope.
I walked up the stairs, stepping into the soundproofed glass enclosure. The sudden quiet was jarring. Vance looked up from his drink, a condescending smirk playing on his lips.
"I don't know any Mr. Black," Vance sneered, waving his bodyguards to step closer. "And nobody represents the buyers but me. Who the hell are you?"

"I am the man who is going to dismantle your entire operation," I said calmly, stepping fully into the room.
Before Vance could even register the threat, I moved. The violence was sudden, precise, and absolute. I drove my palm into the throat of the first bodyguard, shattering his windpipe, and spun, drawing my suppressed sidearm in a blur to put two quiet rounds into the chest of the second guard. The women screamed, scrambling out of the booth as Vance desperately reached for the gun at his waistband.
