Chapter 19 - The Journalist

Returning to the foundation, I felt an immense, satisfying weight lift off my shoulders. The federal machinery was officially in motion, and Arthur Sterling’s days as a free man were rapidly coming to an end.
I found Ellen in the grand conservatory of the estate, surrounded by lush green plants and blooming orchids. She was sitting with Clara, holding a cup of warm tea, speaking in soft, comforting tones. Clara looked significantly better than she had a week ago. The dark circles under her eyes were fading, replaced by a fragile, tentative spark of hope.
"Robert," Ellen smiled as I entered the glass-walled room, her face brightening instantly. "Clara was just telling me about her plans to go back to school once her divorce is finalized."
"That’s a wonderful idea," I said, pulling up a chair and sitting beside them. I looked directly at Clara, my expression gentle but completely assured. "You won't have to worry about looking over your shoulder anymore, Clara. The threat has been neutralized."
Clara’s hands trembled slightly as she set her teacup down on the saucer.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice breathless. "Did he agree to a settlement?"
"No," I replied smoothly. "Men like Arthur do not settle. They have to be forcefully dismantled. As of this evening, the FBI is securing a sealed federal indictment against him for massive corporate fraud. He is going to be arrested, and his entire fortune will be seized by the government. He will never be able to afford a lawyer to fight you for custody, let alone bribe a judge."

Clara stared at me, sheer, unadulterated shock washing over her pale face. For a long moment, she couldn't speak. Then, slowly, heavily, she buried her face in her hands and began to weep. They were not tears of fear, but the overwhelming, powerful tears of a woman who had finally been set free from a lifelong nightmare.
Ellen reached out, wrapping her arms tightly around Clara, holding her as she cried. She looked up at me over Clara’s shaking shoulder, her dark eyes filled with a boundless, fierce love and profound gratitude. I had made a vow to protect the innocent, and I would spend the rest of my life fulfilling it.
