Chapter 14 - Robert's Countermeasure

I did not wait for Arthur Sterling to make his next move. The defensive strategies of the past had taught me that survival required preemptive, overwhelming action. I locked myself in my private study that evening, pulling out a secure laptop and opening encrypted communication channels I hadn't used since the days I systematically dismantled Miller Logistics to secure Ellen’s freedom.
I contacted an elite team of independent forensic accountants and cyber investigators. I gave them a single, clear objective: I wanted every financial record, every hidden offshore account, and every dirty political donation connected to Arthur Sterling dragged into the light.
"Robert, are you coming to bed?"
Ellen stood in the doorway of the study, wearing a soft silk robe. She looked at the glowing screens of my monitors, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of understanding and gentle concern.

"He came to the gates today, didn't he?" she asked softly, resting her hands on my chest.
"He did. But he didn't get past them, and he never will."
"You’re going after his company," Ellen stated, not as a question, but as a known fact. She knew the depths of the lengths I would go to protect the peace we had built.
"Men like Sterling only understand one language, Ellen. Power and money. If I strip him of his wealth, I strip him of his ability to terrorize Clara and her son. I won't let another monster roam free while we have the resources to break him."
Ellen looked up at me, a fierce, unwavering light shining in her eyes.

"Then break him, Robert. Break him so completely that he can never hurt another human being as long as he lives."
I kissed her deeply, drawing strength from her unyielding courage. She was no longer the fragile, broken woman I had found weeping on a cold floor two years ago. She was a queen, and she was commanding her knight to go to war.
