Chapter 18 - Uncovering the Link

I could not ignore the fact that Sterling possessed a network of corrupt law enforcement officers. If I simply handed the financial dossier over to the local police, there was a high probability that one of his paid insiders would intercept the evidence and bury it permanently. I needed a completely untouchable, federal avenue to ensure his absolute destruction.

I scheduled a discreet, highly classified meeting at a quiet coffee shop in the city with an old friend of mine—Special Agent Thomas Vance of the FBI’s financial crimes division. We had served together in the military years ago, and he owed me his life from a particularly brutal deployment overseas.

Thomas sat across from me in a secluded booth, stirring his black coffee, his sharp eyes scanning the room out of habit.

"You don't call unless the world is ending, Robert," Thomas noted, taking a slow sip. "What kind of fire are you trying to put out this time?"

"I'm not trying to put out a fire, Tom," I said, sliding a thick, encrypted flash drive across the polished wooden table. "I'm trying to start one."

Thomas picked up the drive, rolling it thoughtfully between his fingers.

"What’s on it?"

"Undeniable, irrefutable proof of massive corporate fraud, tax evasion, and illegal municipal kickbacks orchestrated by Arthur Sterling. Over thirty million dollars funneled through Cayman Island shell companies."

Thomas raised an eyebrow, genuinely impressed. "Sterling is a big fish. He has a lot of friends in City Hall."

"That is exactly why I didn't take this to the local precinct," I explained, my voice low and urgent. "He has local officers on his payroll. If you take this case, Tom, you need to keep it strictly federal. A sealed indictment. A surprise raid. Give him absolutely no time to leverage his political connections."

Thomas slipped the drive into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, a grim, determined smile touching his lips.

"I owe you, Robert. And honestly, I despise arrogant rich men who think they can buy the law. I will have a federal judge review this evidence by midnight. If it’s as solid as you claim, Sterling will be in handcuffs before the weekend."

"Make sure it’s a public arrest," I said coldly. "I want the whole city to watch his empire fall."
