Chapter 21 - A Dangerous Game

|
The arrest of Arthur Sterling sent a massive shockwave through the entire city. For weeks, the local newspapers and television stations obsessively covered the sprawling details of his staggering financial crimes, the offshore accounts, and the swift, brutal dismantling of his corrupt empire. But within the high, secure walls of the Ellen Whitaker Foundation, the news simply marked the beginning of a profound, undisturbed peace.
Clara’s divorce proceedings were expedited through the courts with unprecedented speed. Without Sterling’s stolen wealth to fund a vicious legal battle, his remaining attorneys quickly folded, granting Clara full, uncompromised custody of her son and a heavily protected financial settlement from the legally seized assets.
One brisk morning, I was walking the perimeter of the estate with David, inspecting the newly installed thermal cameras. The autumn air was sharp and invigorating, filling my lungs with a clean, refreshing energy.
"The security grids are operating at one hundred percent efficiency, Robert," David reported, handing me a digital tablet displaying the encrypted feeds. "We haven't had a single unauthorized vehicle approach the gates since the FBI raid on Sterling’s headquarters."
"Maintain the current alert level, David," I instructed, handing the tablet back to him. "Just because one predator is locked in a cage does not mean the forest is entirely safe. We stay vigilant. Always."
"Understood, sir."
I left David to his duties and made my way back toward the main residential building. As I approached the large outdoor patio, I saw Ellen sitting on a wooden bench, wrapped in a thick, comfortable sweater. She was holding a small, leather-bound journal, writing meticulously with a silver pen. She looked up as she heard my footsteps crunching on the gravel path, a brilliant, breathtaking smile immediately illuminating her face.
"Writing your memoirs already, Mrs. Whitaker?" I teased gently, sitting down beside her and wrapping my arm securely around her waist.
May you like
"Not quite," she laughed softly, leaning her head against my shoulder. "I'm drafting the expansion proposal for the foundation. We have received over five million dollars in anonymous donations since the news of Sterling’s arrest broke. People want to support us, Robert. We can build a second housing wing. We can help so many more women."
I kissed her forehead, my heart overflowing with an impossible amount of love. "Then we build it, sweetheart. We build it as big as you want."
