Chapter 34 - The Gathering Storm

|
The morning brought a fragile, deceptive calm to the sanctuary. The torrential rain had stopped, leaving the massive grounds glistening under a pale, overcast sky. I stood by the large bay window in our private kitchen, watching the children in the secure residential wings being escorted to the indoor recreation center. We had initiated a soft lockdown, keeping the residents blissfully unaware of the potential threat while completely removing them from any exposed sightlines.
Ellen walked into the kitchen, looking exhausted but deeply resolute. She wrapped her arms around my waist from behind, pressing her face against my back.
"She is finally sleeping," Ellen murmured, her voice thick with fatigue. "Maya's injuries are severe, but her spirit is surprisingly intact. She told me a little about the men who held her."
"I don't want you burdening yourself with their cruelty, Ellen," I said, turning around to pull her into a proper embrace. "That is my job."
"I am the lead doctor of this foundation, Arthur," she reminded me gently, looking up into my eyes. "I need to know what we are dealing with. She mentioned a man named Silas. He runs a trafficking ring out of the northern ports."
The name hit me like a physical blow. Silas. It was a ghost from a life I thought I had buried beneath the concrete of this sanctuary.
"You know him," Ellen stated, reading the immediate, dark shift in my expression.
"I knew of him," I corrected, my jaw clenching involuntarily. "He was a mid-level enforcer years ago. If he has taken over the northern ports, he has resources. Violent resources."
Before Ellen could respond, the kitchen door swung open, and Hope bounded in, blissfully unaware of the tension in the room. She was holding a violently colored drawing of a dog.
"Daddy, look!" Hope cheered, holding up the paper. "I drew Barnaby! He has laser eyes to protect us!"
I forced the darkness out of my eyes and knelt down to her level, offering her a wide, genuine smile. "That is a fierce guard dog, sweetheart. I think he will do a spectacular job."

"Are we staying inside today?" Hope asked, tilting her head.
"Just for today," I told her, kissing her cheek. "Daddy has some important work to do around the yard." I looked up at Ellen, my promise silent but absolute. I would slaughter a thousand men before I let them touch this peace.
