Chapter 13 - The Warning

|
The inevitable confrontation happened three days later. The autumn wind was howling through the tall oak trees surrounding the estate when the perimeter alarms softly chimed in my office. Two sleek, black SUVs with heavily tinted windows had parked aggressively, directly blocking our main security gates.
I didn't send David to handle it. I walked out of the main building, pulling my dark coat tight against the cold, and strode down the long driveway. The heavy iron gates remained locked, acting as a sturdy barrier between the sanctuary and the outside world.
A man stepped out of the lead SUV. He wore a sharp, expensive designer suit and a condescending smirk that immediately reminded me of Michael. It was Arthur Sterling. He walked up to the iron bars, looking through them as if he were inspecting a property he intended to buy.
"Open the gate," Arthur demanded, his tone dripping with the arrogance of a man who was used to absolute obedience. "My wife is in there. I am here to take her and my son home."
I stood a few feet away from the gate, my hands casually resting in my pockets, my expression entirely unreadable.
"You are trespassing on private property, Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice carrying clearly over the wind. "There is no one here who wishes to see you. I strongly suggest you turn your vehicles around and leave."
Arthur’s smirk vanished, replaced by a dark, ugly scowl.
"You don't know who you are dealing with. I have judges on my payroll. I can have this pathetic little charity shut down by tomorrow morning with a single phone call. Bring Clara out here right now."
May you like
"I know exactly who I am dealing with," I replied coldly, stepping closer to the iron bars until we were mere inches apart, separated only by metal. "You are a coward who breaks women behind closed doors because you are too weak to face a real man. Clara is under the protection of the Ellen Whitaker Foundation. If you ever come within a mile of these gates again, I will not call the police. I will handle you myself."
Arthur glared at me, his fists clenching, but the absolute, murderous certainty in my eyes made him take a slow step back. He returned to his SUV and drove away, but I knew this was far from over.
