Chapter 43 - The Middleman

I closed the distance before Vance could draw his weapon, grabbing his wrist and twisting it violently until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. Vance screamed, dropping to his knees, his tailored suit instantly ruined by the blood pooling on the glass floor. I kicked his fallen gun away and grabbed him by the lapels, hauling his face inches from mine.
"Shut up," I commanded, my voice a deadly, vibrating low tone that cut completely through his agony. "If you scream again, I will put a bullet through your kneecap and leave you for the police."
Vance gasped, his face completely pale, sweat pouring down his forehead. He looked at the bodies of his elite guards, then back at me, absolute terror finally overriding his arrogance.
"Who are you?" he choked out, cradling his shattered wrist against his chest.
"I am the consequence of Silas sending men to my home," I stated coldly, pressing the hot suppressor of my pistol directly against his temple. "You have one chance to survive this night, Vance. Tell me exactly what time the cargo ship arrives at the Narrows tomorrow, and tell me where Silas will be standing when it docks."
"He'll kill me," Vance sobbed, shaking uncontrollably. "If I talk, Silas will skin me alive!"
"Silas is a dead man walking," I assured him, applying slightly more pressure with the barrel of the gun. "And if you don't answer me in three seconds, you are going to beat him to hell. One."
Vance squeezed his eyes shut.
"Two."
"Three AM!" Vance screamed, breaking completely. "The ship docks at three AM at Pier 9! Silas will be in the overseer's office in Warehouse 44, finalizing the transfer payments. He has thirty men on the floor, heavily armed."
"And the hostages?" I demanded.

"They are moving them straight from the ship to the transport trucks inside the warehouse," Vance whimpered. "Please. I told you everything."
"You did," I agreed calmly. I brought the butt of my pistol down hard against his temple, instantly knocking him unconscious. I didn't kill him; the police would find him surrounded by his dead guards and an illegal weapon, ending his career permanently. I checked my watch. I had exactly five hours to prepare for a war.
