Chapter 26 - The Letter from Prison

|

Bringing Hope back to the estate felt like bringing a missing piece of our soul finally home. The foundation grounds, usually a place of quiet, focused recovery, seemed to vibrate with a new, joyous energy. The towering concrete walls and heavy iron gates no longer felt like a defensive barrier against a cruel world; they felt like the loving, protective embrace of a true sanctuary.

I spent the first few weeks in a state of exhausted, euphoric vigilance. I refused to let anyone other than Ellen or myself hold the baby, my protective instincts dialed up to an absolute, unyielding maximum. I would spend hours simply sitting in the rocking chair in the nursery, holding my sleeping daughter against my chest, listening to the soft, steady rhythm of her breathing.

"You are going to spoil her terribly, Robert," Ellen teased one afternoon, leaning against the nursery doorframe, watching me meticulously adjust the blanket covering Hope for the fourth time.

"She deserves to be spoiled," I replied softly, not taking my eyes off the tiny, perfect face resting against my shoulder. "She is a princess. She will have the entire world at her feet, and I will personally destroy anyone who ever tries to make her cry."

Ellen walked over, pressing a gentle, loving kiss to my cheek. "You are an amazing father. But you have to let her breathe, my fierce knight. She is safe here. We all are."

The truth of her words settled deeply into my bones. We were safe. Michael was locked away in a cold, unforgiving cell, his name entirely forgotten by the world. Arthur Sterling was serving a massive federal sentence, his corrupt empire completely dismantled and sold for parts. The monsters who had tried to break my wife were permanently erased from our reality.

I looked down at the delicate, sleeping infant in my arms, and then up at the strong, radiant, incredible woman who had survived hell to build this paradise. The war was officially over. The brutal battles of the past were nothing more than fading scars, replaced by the brilliant, undeniable promise of a beautiful future.
