Chapter 7 - Julian's Suspicion

The winter wind howled against the leaded glass windows of the master study as the grandfather clock chimed midnight. Julian Sterling stood by the roaring fireplace, holding a crystal tumbler of aged scotch that remained untouched in his hand.
He stared down at a framed photograph on his desk—a picture taken four years ago of Elena holding newborn Lily on the hospital bed, her face radiant with pure, unconditional love. He remembered the gentle, selfless woman who had never asked for a single penny of the Sterling fortune during their quiet separation.
The heavy study door creaked open, and Julian turned to see little Lily standing in the threshold, shivering in her flannel pajamas. She was clutching Barnaby tightly against her chest, her bare feet red from the cold hardwood floors.
"Lily? What are you doing out of bed, sweetheart?" Julian asked softly, setting his glass on the mantle and kneeling down before his daughter. He noticed that the child flinched violently when his shadow crossed over her, pulling the rabbit up like a protective shield.
"Daddy... is the closet locked tonight?" Lily asked in a tiny, trembling voice that shattered Julian’s heart. "Auntie Camilla said if I make noise, the closet monsters will eat my toes."
Julian’s brow furrowed in deep, sudden confusion, a cold knot of dread forming in the pit of his stomach. "What closet monsters, Lily? Who told you that?"
Before the child could answer, the sharp, distinctive sound of Camilla’s stiletto heels echoed down the grand corridor. Camilla appeared in the doorway wearing an elaborate silk kimono, her face instantly melting into a mask of sweet, maternal concern.
"Oh, Julian, darling! Lily had another one of her tragic night terrors," Camilla cooed, gliding into the study and attempting to scoop the child into her arms. "She gets so terribly confused between reality and her mother's violent fairy tales."
Lily pulled away from Camilla’s reaching hands with a terrified shriek, burying her face into Julian’s neck as her little body shook with violent sobs. Julian felt the raw, unvarnished panic radiating from his daughter—a panic directed not at the dark, but squarely at his new wife.
"Camilla, leave us for a moment," Julian said, his voice dropping into a stern, authoritative tone that surprised even himself. His eyes swept over Camilla’s immaculate appearance, noticing the faint flash of cold irritation that crossed her features before she masked it.

"Of course, darling," Camilla purred, backing away with a tight, artificial smile. "Don't let her manipulate you with her mother's theatrical tricks."
As the study door clicked shut, Julian sat on the leather sofa, holding his daughter in his arms as she wept into his shoulder. Deep in the quiet night, the father began to realize that the grand house he had built was not a palace of protection, but a gilded prison of terror.
