Chapter 4 - The Whispering Rabbit

The basement visitation room of the Dallas County Family Court was a sterile box of cinderblock walls and flickering fluorescent tubes. A court-appointed supervisor sat in the corner with a clipboard, chewing gum while scrolling through her social media feed.
The metal door opened, and Elena rushed into the room, her eyes swollen and bloodshot from seventy-two hours of sleepless torment. When she saw Lily sitting at the small plastic play table, a broken cry tore from her throat as she dropped to her knees.
"Lily! My sweet, precious baby!" Elena wept, wrapping her arms around her daughter and pulling her into an embrace so tight their heartbeats merged. She kissed the top of Lily’s messy curls, breathing in the familiar, sweet scent of baby shampoo and lavender.
Lily clung to Elena’s neck with desperate, white-knuckled strength, burying her face in the hollow of her mother's collarbone. The little girl was trembling violently, her small hands clutching Elena’s woolen sweater as if letting go would plunge her into an abyss.
"Mommy... please take me home," Lily whispered in a terrified, fragile voice. "The emerald lady said you traded me for parties... she said you locked me in the dark."
Elena’s heart shattered into a thousand jagged pieces as the monstrous reality of Camilla’s psychological torture became clear. She gently pulled back, framing Lily’s tear-stained face with her trembling palms, looking straight into her daughter's hazel eyes.
"That is a wicked lie, sweetheart," Elena said with absolute, unyielding conviction. "Mommy loves you more than all the stars in the sky, and I will fight every person on this earth until you are back in my arms forever."
Elena reached into her large canvas tote bag and pulled out a worn, gray plush bunny with long floppy ears and a frayed pink satin bow. It was 'Barnaby'—the comforting toy Lily had held every single night since the day she was brought home from the hospital.
"Look who came to visit you, Lily," Elena whispered, pressing the soft toy into her daughter’s trembling hands. "Barnaby missed you so very much."
What neither the indifferent court supervisor nor Camilla’s private surveillance team knew was that Barnaby was no longer just a stuffed animal. Tucked deep inside the synthetic cotton stuffing beneath the rabbit's left ear was a micro-sized, military-grade audio transmitter and encrypted flash drive.
The covert surveillance device had been engineered by Elena’s closest friend, David Torres—a former cyber-surveillance specialist for Naval Intelligence. The transmitter was programmed to broadcast a continuous, high-definition audio feed directly to an encrypted cloud server monitored by Elena's legal team.

"Keep Barnaby with you day and night, baby," Elena murmured into Lily's ear, kissing the soft satin ribbon. "Whenever you are scared, squeeze his left paw, and Barnaby will listen to everything and keep you safe."
Lily clutched the rabbit against her chest, a fragile spark of comfort returning to her wide, innocent eyes. The supervisor checked her watch and loudly cleared her throat, signaling that the thirty-minute visitation was officially terminated.
