Chapter 3 - The Velvet Cage

The grand nursery on the third floor of the Sterling estate smelled of lavender polish, fresh paint, and deep, suffocating isolation. Four-year-old Lily sat on the edge of the massive canopy bed, her little patent leather shoes dangling inches above the plush Persian rug.

The room was filled with hundreds of expensive toys, mechanical dolls, and designer dresses that still carried their price tags. Yet the towering mahogany door remained locked from the outside with a heavy brass key that rested in Camilla’s pocket.

The lock clicked open with a sharp, echoing snap that made Lily flinch and pull her knees to her chest. Camilla stepped inside, holding a silver tray with a bowl of cold vegetable soup and a small glass of water.

She set the tray down on the antique vanity, her tailored silk dress rustling like dry autumn leaves in the quiet room. Her eyes swept over the trembling child with open disdain, devoid of the gentle warmth a mother gave a frightened daughter.

"Eat your dinner, Lily," Camilla commanded, crossing her arms over her chest as she stood over the bed. "And stop that pathetic sniffling before your father comes home from the corporate office."

"I want my mommy..." Lily whimpered, a fat tear rolling down her soft, flushed cheek. "Mommy always reads me the bunny book before bed."

Camilla let out a short, cruel laugh that made the chandeliers vibrate with cold malice. She reached out, her sharp crimson nails gripping Lily’s small chin, forcing the child to look directly into her icy eyes.

"Your mommy doesn't want you anymore, you stupid little thing," Camilla hissed softly, digging her fingers into the soft flesh of the child's jaw. "Your mommy traded you to me so she could buy new clothes and go to parties with her boyfriends."

Lily shook her head frantically, her lower lip quivering as she fought against the painful grip on her face. "Mommy loves me! Mommy said I'm her special sunshine!"

"If she loved you, would she have left you outside in the rain while I had to come rescue you?" Camilla sneered, releasing her chin with a disdainful shove. "You belong to the Sterling name now, which means you do exactly as I say."

"Tomorrow morning, a lady from the court is coming to ask you questions about your mother," Camilla continued, her voice dropping into a menacing, melodic whisper. "You are going to tell her that Mommy locks you in the dark closet when she gets angry."

May you like

"You are going to tell her that Mommy forgets to feed you and that you want to live with Auntie Camilla forever," she ordered, leaning down until her perfume choked the child's senses. "If you say one wrong word, I will throw your favorite stuffed toys into the incinerator and lock you in the cellar."

Lily pulled her hands over her ears, burying her face into the silk pillows, sobbing until her tiny ribs ached with terror. Camilla straightened her diamond necklace, walked to the doorway, and turned the brass key in the lock, leaving the little girl alone in the dark.
