Chapter 10 - The Courtroom Confrontation

Courtroom 7A of the Dallas County Family Court was packed to maximum capacity with high-society patrons, prominent corporate executives, and dozens of legal reporters. The air inside the vaulted mahogany chamber was heavy with suffocating, high-stakes tension.
Camilla Sterling sat at the primary petitioner table, dressed in an immaculate cream Chanel suit, her diamond brooch gleaming beneath the recessed lighting. She radiated the calm, untouchable elegance of a woman who believed she held all the cards in the deck.
Beside her sat Julian Sterling, looking pale and tense in his dark charcoal suit, his gaze fixed permanently on the polished wooden floor. Beside Julian sat little Lily, wearing a long-sleeved navy dress that concealed the fresh bruises on her shoulder, clutching Barnaby tightly against her chest.
At the defense table sat Elena, dressed in a simple, perfectly tailored black pantsuit, her silver cross necklace resting against her collarbone. Her back was straight, her head held high, her eyes fixed upon her daughter with an ocean of unyielding maternal love.
Chief District Judge Robert Thornton stepped onto the elevated bench, his heavy black robes rustling as the entire assembly rose to their feet. At the rear of the courtroom, six armed United States Marshals stood in tight tactical formation, their eyes scanning the room with silent vigilance.
"This court is now in session regarding the matter of permanent custody for the minor child, Lily Vance," Judge Thornton announced, his deep voice resounding through the microphones. "Counsel for the petitioner, Mrs. Camilla Sterling, you may present your opening statement."
Camilla’s high-priced lead attorney, Harrison Montgomery, stepped to the wooden podium with an arrogant, condescending smirk. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, holding up a thick leather binder stamped with the state seal.

"Your Honor, today we present incontrovertible documentation of systemic maternal neglect, psychological instability, and physical endangerment committed by the respondent, Elena Vance," Montgomery boomed to the gallery. "We will demonstrate that the child's physical and emotional survival depends entirely upon her permanent placement under the exclusive guardianship of Mr. and Mrs. Sterling."
Camilla dabbed a non-existent tear from her eye with a lace handkerchief, casting a look of triumphant, theatrical sorrow toward the watching journalists. She truly believed that within the hour, Elena would be led out in handcuffs, leaving her as the undisputed queen of the Sterling dynasty.
