Chapter 5 - The Cold Manor

The towering oak trees surrounding the Sterling estate groaned beneath the weight of a sudden November frost. Inside the grand dining room, eight-year-old chandeliers cast a sterile, golden light over a table set with silver candelabras and antique bone china.

Julian Sterling sat at the head of the table in a bespoke navy suit, cutting his filet mignon with mechanical, distracted precision. His dark hair was disheveled, and the deep creases around his eyes told the story of an escalating corporate empire and a broken home.

Camilla sat to his right, wearing an emerald-green velvet dress, delicately pouring red wine into Julian’s crystal goblet. She projected the image of the devoted, self-sacrificing stepmother carrying the heavy burden of a fractured family.

"The child barely touched her organic vegetables again tonight, Julian," Camilla sighed with practiced, theatrical sorrow. "She threw her porcelain plate across the nursery floor and screamed that Elena told her to spit in my food."

Julian set his silver fork down, rubbing his throbbing temples with a deep, weary groan. "I don't understand what happened to Elena, Camilla... she was never this unstable when we were together."

"Trauma and financial desperation do terrible things to weak minds, darling," Camilla purred, placing her manicured hand over his wrist. "Elena is using Lily as a weapon to extort a multi-million-dollar cash settlement from the Sterling trust."

Upstairs in the locked nursery, the reality was terrifyingly different. Lily was huddled in the dark space beneath the mahogany writing desk, clutching Barnaby tightly against her ribs as tears soaked into the rabbit's gray fur.

A hidden floorboard creaked in the hallway, followed by the muffled sound of Camilla’s stiletto heels approaching the bedroom door. The brass lock clicked open, and Camilla stepped inside, shutting the door firmly behind her back.

"Come out from under that desk, you little rat," Camilla commanded, her voice dropping all pretense of gentility. She walked over to the desk, grabbing Lily by the collar of her nightgown and dragging her roughly onto the carpet.

"I saw you holding that disgusting, dirty rabbit during the social worker’s interview this afternoon," Camilla snarled, towering over the child. "You didn't cry on cue like I told you to! You didn't tell her that Elena hit you with the wooden spoon!"

"Because Mommy never hit me!" Lily screamed, tears streaming down her red cheeks as she hugged Barnaby with both arms. "Mommy gives me hugs! You're the mean lady who pinches my arms!"

Camilla’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred. She raised her hand and struck the four-year-old across the cheek with a sharp, stinging slap that echoed through the empty room.

"You listen to me, you worthless little bastard," Camilla whispered, kneeling down until her venomous breath brushed the child's bruised ear. "Your father doesn't love you; he only keeps you here to protect his family image in the newspapers."

"If you don't repeat every single lie I gave you in court on Monday, I will take this dirty rabbit and throw it into the garden shredder," she threatened, pointing at Barnaby. Deep inside the plush ear, the microscopic red sensor pulsed silently, transmitting every word, every threat, and the sickening sound of the physical strike straight to David’s cloud server.
