Chapter 8 - Blood on the Docks

The industrial waterfront was transformed into a raging war zone beneath the flashing lightning and howling winds of the storm. High-caliber tracer rounds streaked across the dark shipping lanes, ricocheting off massive steel cranes and igniting diesel drums into towering pillars of orange fire.
Vincent moved with ruthless, lethal precision, eliminating two cartel mercenaries flanking the container yard with synchronized double-taps. His tactical security team formed an impenetrable diamond formation around Clara, returning devastating fire that drove the remaining attackers back toward the water.
Clara navigated the maze of rusted cargo containers with absolute certainty, her childhood memories guiding them through the darkness. She reached a heavy iron hatch concealed beneath an overgrown concrete drainage culvert near the water’s edge.
“This is the secondary access shaft!” Clara shouted over the deafening roar of the firefight. “The hydraulic lock is controlled by a manual brass counterweight beneath the floorboards!”
Vincent holstered his sidearms, grabbing the rusted iron lever and pulling with all his formidable strength until the ancient gears groaned in protest. The heavy hatch swung upward with a pneumatic hiss, revealing a concrete staircase descending into the subterranean foundations of the pier.
Before they could descend, the heavy thud of combat boots echoed from the top of the adjacent container stack. A scarred cartel enforcer armed with a modified shotgun leaped down onto the landing, leveling the barrel directly at Clara’s chest.
Vincent reacted in a fraction of a second, throwing his own body across Clara and tackling the mercenary off the concrete platform into the icy black water below. A resounding splash echoed through the pilings as the two men disappeared beneath the turbulent surface of the lake.
Clara gasped, running to the edge of the railing and peering down into the churning water with pure, suffocating terror. “Vincent!”

Ten agonizing seconds passed before the water broke, and Vincent surfaced, hauling himself onto the wooden dock pilings with one arm while tossing the enemy’s disarmed weapon onto the deck. He climbed back onto the concrete landing, soaked to the skin, his dark hair plastered across his forehead, looking like an unstoppable force of nature.
He grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her down into the concrete stairwell as the heavy iron hatch slammed shut above them. “I told you, Clara… nobody touches you as long as I am breathing.”
