Chapter 7 - The Waterfront Ambush

While the corporate board members were being detained for federal questioning, a frantic transmission crackled through Vincent’s tactical communicator. Nolan’s voice sounded over the private line, accompanied by the distant roar of marine diesel engines and automatic weapons fire.

“Boss, the Castiglione cartel’s secondary strike team has launched an armed assault on Pier 42!” Nolan reported through heavy static. “They are attempting to breach the subterranean vault where David Vance stored the original physical shipping bonds!”

Vincent released Julian, allowing the bruised executive to collapse onto the floor, and turned immediately toward Clara. “The physical bonds are the only sovereign documents that cannot be superseded by digital probate filings; if they destroy that vault, the legal title to the harbor remains disputed.”

“I know the maintenance tunnels beneath Pier 42,” Clara said without a second of hesitation, her eyes blazing with determination. “My father used to take me there every weekend when I was a child; there is a hidden access shaft behind the old pump station.”

Vincent looked at her in surprise, seeing the fierce, unbreakable courage that had survived ten years of poverty and hardship. “It is an active combat zone, Clara; I cannot guarantee your safety once we breach that perimeter.”

“Those docks belonged to my father, Vincent,” Clara replied, unfastening her high heels and stepping into a pair of tactical boots provided by the security detail. “And I am not going to let those monsters burn his legacy to the ground.”

Within five minutes, Vincent’s armored convoy was tearing through the industrial district toward the dark waters of Lake Michigan. Torrential rain lashed against the reinforced glass as the convoy approached the towering steel cranes and rusted container stacks of Pier 42.

As they cleared the final security gate, three customized technical trucks mounted with heavy machine guns opened fire on the lead SUV. Sparks showered across the armored hood as the convoy executed a tactical evasive maneuver, sliding behind a wall of corrugated shipping containers.

Vincent kicked his door open, drawing twin tactical sidearms as heavy caliber rounds tore through the sheet metal around them. “Nolan, lay down suppressive fire with the heavy rifles! Clara, stay on my six and lead us to the pump station!”
