Chapter 13 - The Prison Confession

Six months after the federal indictments were unsealed, the heavy steel security doors of the Federal Correctional Institution in Pekin, Illinois, buzzed open. Vincent Sterling walked into the stark, concrete visiting room, dressed in a sharp navy suit that exuded commanding, unshakeable authority.

Sitting behind the reinforced glass partition was Victoria Sterling, wearing a faded orange prison jumpsuit, her once-luxurious blonde hair chopped short and unkempt. The arrogant, high-society matriarch had been stripped of her jewelry, her designer clothes, and her vanity, leaving behind a hollow, bitter shell.

“Did you come here to gloat over my destruction, Vincent?” Victoria rasped into the black telephone receiver, her voice trembling with venomous rage. “Did you come to see the woman who raised you rotting in a concrete cage?”

Vincent picked up his receiver, his expression completely calm, steady, and detached from her toxic bitterness. “You didn't raise me, Victoria; you tolerated me until you thought you had enough forged paperwork to steal my father’s life’s work.”

Victoria gripped the plastic receiver until her knuckles turned white against the glass. “Julian and I built that corporate network! We deserved that empire more than a weak boy who spent his life chasing ghost ships!”

“Julian was sentenced to forty-five years at ADX Florence Supermax yesterday morning,” Vincent informed her with absolute, chilling finality. “He took a plea deal that requires him to testify against every corrupt judge and banker on your payroll in exchange for avoiding consecutive life terms.”

Victoria gasped, her breath catching in her throat as the final betrayal by her own son destroyed the last lingering shred of her pride. She had sacrificed everything, murdered innocent people, and burned down her own family for a boy who had sold her out to save his own skin.

“The Sterling estate in Lake Forest has been leveled, Victoria,” Vincent continued, his voice echoing with quiet triumph. “We donated the entire fifty-acre property to the state to build the David Vance Children’s Hospital and Research Center.”

Victoria began to weep hysterically, slamming the receiver against the glass partition as the correctional officers stepped forward to restrain her arms. Vincent slowly hung up his receiver, stood up, and walked out into the clean, crisp autumn air without looking back for a single second.
