Chapter 2 - The Blueprint in the Titanium

The express elevator ascended sixty floors in complete, suffocating silence before opening directly into the penthouse master suite. The vast residence was lined with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows overlooking Lake Michigan, furnished in minimalist black leather and polished mahogany.
Vincent walked over to the central marble island, setting the brushed titanium briefcase onto the surface under the recessed spotlight. He pressed his thumb against the dual biometric scanners, followed by a retinal scan that caused the mechanical latches to pop open with a soft hiss.
Clara stood near the entrance, holding her damp jacket around her shoulders as she watched the case unlock. Inside rested an encrypted sovereign satellite drive, three velvet-lined document folders, and a series of authenticated maritime shipping manifests stamped with a golden anchor crest.
Vincent flipped open the top parchment, his sharp jaw hardening into rigid stone as he read the corporate registries. Stamped across the primary equity distribution was the name of his stepmother, Victoria Sterling, alongside the signature of Don Salvatore Castiglione.
“This isn't just a corporate takeover,” Vincent said, his deep voice dropping into a register of icy venom. “Victoria engineered the ambush on my convoy in the southern channel to declare me deceased before tomorrow’s annual shareholder summit.”
Clara stepped closer to the island, her gaze accidentally catching the name printed on the secondary maritime deed. Her breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the cursive signature on the yellowed document: David Vance - Vance Harbor Logistics.
“Where did you get that deed?” Clara asked, her voice trembling with an emotion that caught Vincent completely off guard. “That company belonged to my late father before he went bankrupt ten years ago.”
Vincent spun around, his icy grey eyes narrowing as he scrutinized Clara’s face with intense, disbelieving scrutiny. He pulled the archival dossier from the bottom of the case, comparing her facial structure to the vintage black-and-white photograph tucked inside.
“David Vance didn't go bankrupt, Clara,” Vincent revealed, sliding the authenticated forensic audit across the counter. “David Vance owned forty-nine percent of the deep-water docking rights in the Port of Chicago before he was framed for contraband smuggling.”
Clara felt the floor tilt beneath her feet as the painful memories of her ruined childhood crashed back into her mind. Her father had died of a broken heart in a modest rental home after losing his shipping terminals to corporate vultures.

“My father spent ten years trying to prove his innocence before he passed away,” Clara whispered, tears burning in her eyes. “He told me the real ledgers were stolen by a man wearing an emerald signet ring.”
Vincent raised his left hand, turning his wrist slightly so the light caught the dark platinum band on his finger. “My father never wore emeralds, Clara… but my corrupt stepbrother, Julian Sterling, has worn an emerald signet ring since his eighteenth birthday.”
