Chapter 1 - The Plaza Ambush

The deafening screech of customized ceramic brakes tore through the rainy silence of the obsidian plaza. Three armored black luxury SUVs skidded onto the wet cobblestones, cutting off every pedestrian exit in a synchronized military maneuver.
Vincent Sterling did not hesitate for a fraction of a second, lunging forward with blinding speed. He grabbed Clara by her olive jacket, pulling her behind the reinforced granite pillars of the corporate tower as automatic gunfire erupted across the courtyard.
The heavy titanium briefcase clattered onto the stone between them, reflecting the muzzle flashes illuminating the foggy afternoon. High-caliber rounds chewed through the windshield of Clara’s rusted silver hatchback, turning the glass into a shower of sparkling fragments.
“Stay low and keep your head down against the stone,” Vincent ordered in a gravelly, lethal whisper. He drew a custom semi-automatic sidearm from his shoulder holster, checking the chamber with a crisp metallic snap.
Clara pressed her back against the wet granite, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She watched in stunned silence as the cold billionaire transformed into a combat-hardened warlord within a single heartbeat.
Six masked operatives in dark tactical windbreakers spilled out from the SUVs, laying down suppressive fire toward the executive entrance. Vincent’s personal security team returned fire from the revolving doors, pinning the lead mercenaries behind the smoking engine blocks.
Vincent leaned around the edge of the pillar, firing three disciplined, pinpoint shots into the headlights of the nearest vehicle. The pressurized radiator exploded in a cloud of scalding steam, sending two gunmen scrambling for cover across the slick flagstones.
“Boss, we have multiple hostiles flanking through the parking mezzanine!” his chief of security shouted through an encrypted earpiece. “The Castiglione syndicate sent a clean-up squad to intercept that briefcase before it reaches the vault!”
Vincent grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her toward the reinforced private elevator alcove behind the security desk. Clara scooped up the heavy titanium case with her other hand, refusing to abandon the object that had brought this war to her feet.
The heavy ballistic glass doors of the tower slid shut behind them with a pneumatic hiss, sealing out the deafening roar of the firefight. Vincent punched a six-digit emergency override code into the elevator panel, his dark eyes locked onto Clara’s trembling face.

“You have five seconds to tell me if anyone followed you from the diner,” Vincent demanded, his chest heaving as the elevator ascended rapidly. “Because if they tracked your license plate, your life as a waitress ended the moment you touched that briefcase.”
Clara took a ragged breath, brushing wet strands of dark hair from her eyes as she looked directly into his piercing gaze. “Nobody followed me, Mr. Sterling, but judging by the firepower outside, you have far bigger problems than my diner tips.”
