Chapter 3 - The Ambush at Sam’s Diner

Before Clara could process the horrifying revelation about her family’s past, Vincent’s private satellite communicator buzzed aggressively on the counter. His chief of cyber-intelligence, Nolan, appeared on the high-definition video monitor mounted against the wall.
“Boss, we just intercepted a police dispatch from County Highway 42,” Nolan reported with grim urgency. “Two unidentified black sedans just firebombed the roadside diner where Miss Vance was employed forty-five minutes ago.”
Clara gasped, clapping her hand over her mouth as horror surged through her veins. “Sam! The cook and the dishwashers were still closing the kitchen!”
“The local fire department arrived within ten minutes, and the building was evacuated with zero casualties,” Nolan quickly clarified, bringing up live security feeds of the burning diner. “However, the arsonists left a customized Castiglione cartel calling card pinned to the charred cash register.”
Vincent’s expression turned into a terrifying mask of absolute, unshakeable fury. “They are burning down every location she touched to eliminate any potential witnesses who saw me leave the briefcase behind.”
He walked over to Clara, placing his hands firmly on her shoulders and looking down into her terrified hazel eyes. “You cannot go back to your apartment, Clara, and you cannot contact anyone from your old life until this syndicate is eradicated.”
“My entire life was inside that diner locker, Mr. Sterling!” Clara cried, her composure fracturing under the relentless onslaught of violence. “My father’s original journals, my identity papers, and the last letters he ever wrote to me!”
Vincent shook his head gently, his voice softening with rare, genuine warmth that contradicted his ruthless reputation. “Your father’s real legacy is sitting right here inside this titanium case, Clara.”

“Victoria and Julian thought they were stealing my maritime empire tonight,” Vincent said, picking up the satellite drive and securing it inside his inner jacket pocket. “They have no idea that by bringing you into this tower, they have handed me the one person who can legally veto their entire corporate coup.”

Clara looked at the documents, then up at the towering billionaire who had shielded her from automatic gunfire without blinking. “What do you need me to do?”
Vincent offered a thin, dangerous smile that would have terrified the most hardened underworld lords. “I need you to trade that olive jacket for a fifty-thousand-dollar evening gown, Clara… because tomorrow morning, we are crashing the board meeting of the century.”
