Chapter 9 - The Shadow Network

With Bradley securely in federal custody, the task force spent the next four hours clearing every hazardous material from the workshop.

Bomb disposal technicians in heavy blast suits carefully loaded the crates of C4 into specialized containment trailers.

Federal forensic accountants sat at our kitchen table, methodically cataloging every fraudulent transaction Bradley had executed over the past five years.

Agent Reynolds handed Beatrice an official release document from the Department of Justice.

"Mrs.

Hayes, the fraudulent mortgage has been officially nullified by executive federal order."

"The three hundred thousand dollars stolen from your late husband’s trust has been fully recovered from Bradley’s frozen offshore accounts and deposited back into a secure treasury escrow for Lucas and Maya."

Beatrice signed the document with shaking hands, tears of profound relief splashing onto the parchment.

She turned to me, her eyes brimming with deep, agonizing regret.

"Valerie... my sweet girl," Beatrice whispered, reaching out to touch my arm.

"All these years, I thought you were just drifting through life in some quiet office job."

"I let Bradley boast, I let Kendra sneer at you, and I never once asked you what you really endured over there."

"Can you ever forgive an old, foolish mother?"

I took my mother’s hand, wrapping my fingers around hers with gentle strength.

"Mom, I never needed your praise to know who I was."

"I stayed quiet because the things I saw in the war were not meant for our dinner table."

"I wanted you, Lucas, and Maya to live in a world where you didn't have to worry about violence or danger."

"I only stepped onto that mat today because someone tried to bring that violence into our home."

Maya came running from the porch, throwing her small arms around my waist.

"Mommy, you were so cool!" Maya squealed, looking up at me with shining eyes.

"You flew Uncle Bradley through the air like a superhero!"

Lucas laughed, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.

"She's not a superhero, Maya."

May you like

"She's Major Hayes."

"And nobody messes with our family ever again."
