Chapter 12 - Cornered at the Docks

Before the formal trial commenced, the Department of Justice required a final on-site inspection of the seized Lake Travis marina property.

I accompanied General Vance and a small security detail to ensure all military property manifests were signed and sealed.

The Texas hill country was breathtaking in the late spring afternoon, the deep blue waters of the lake reflecting the endless sky.

As we walked along the wooden docks, Beatrice and Kendra accompanied us to sign the final property release forms.

Kendra looked at the luxury boats bobbing in the water, her expression filled with quiet sorrow.

"He brought me here last summer, Valerie," Kendra whispered, looking down at the clear water.

"He told me he bought this boat because he wanted to give me the life our father never could."

"I was so blinded by the shiny things that I never stopped to ask where the money came from."

Beatrice placed a comforting hand on Kendra’s shoulder.

"We all made mistakes, Kendra."

"Our father gave us honor, integrity, and love."

"Those are things money can never buy, and things Bradley could never understand."

Lucas and Maya stood at the end of the dock, skipping flat stones across the calm surface of the lake.

Watching my children laugh without fear or tension was the greatest victory of my military career.

General Vance stepped beside me, his hands clasped behind his back, looking out over the water.

"Valerie, the Department of the Army would like to offer you the position of Commandant at the Airborne Combatives Academy at Fort Benning."

"A full-bird Colonel commission is already on the President’s desk waiting for your signature."

I looked at Lucas and Maya, then back at my mother and sister who were slowly learning how to be a real family again.

I smiled, shaking my head with quiet certainty.

"Thank you, General."

"It is the greatest honor of my professional life."

"But my most important mission is right here in Texas, raising my children."

General Vance smiled, his eyes crinkling with deep respect.

"A good commander always knows where they are needed most."

"The commission will remain open whenever you are ready, Major."
