Chapter 10 - The Boy's Retaliation

The following morning, the sun rose over a clean, peaceful backyard.

The scorched grass near the blue mat was a quiet reminder of the battle fought and won.

Lucas woke up early, putting on his running shoes and athletic shorts without being asked.

When I walked out onto the back patio with a mug of black coffee, I found my son practicing his footwork on the grass.

He was moving with focused discipline, keeping his hands high, shifting his weight just as I had demonstrated.

"Keep your chin tucked, Lucas," I said softly from the porch railing.

Lucas paused, wiping sweat from his forehead, and smiled broadly.

"Like this, Mom?" he asked, adjusting his stance with natural athletic intuition.

"Exactly like that," I replied, setting down my mug and stepping onto the lawn beside him.

"True strength doesn't come from bullying people who are smaller than you, Lucas."

"It comes from having the power to destroy someone, and choosing to use that power only to protect the people who cannot protect themselves."

Lucas nodded solemnly, absorbing every word like dry earth absorbing rain.

"Uncle Bradley thought being strong meant being loud," Lucas said.

"He was wrong."

"You were quiet for twelve years, but when you moved, the whole world stopped."

"That’s the kind of soldier I want to be."

I felt a surge of maternal pride that eclipsed every medal pinned to my dress uniform.

"You don't have to be a soldier to be a protector, Lucas."

"You just have to be a man of honor."

Kendra walked out through the back sliding door, wearing an oversized sweater, her eyes swollen and red from crying all night.

She carried a cardboard box containing all of Bradley’s remaining belongings—his fake certificates, his spare watch collections, and his designer cologne.

She walked directly over to the metal burn barrel in the corner of the yard.

Without saying a word, she dropped the box inside, struck a long wooden match, and tossed it into the paper.

A bright orange flame roared to life, consuming the last remnants of the man who had nearly destroyed our lives.
