Chapter 6 - The Stolen Inheritance

The tactical team approached the detached two-story workshop at the rear of the property.

The wooden structure was heavily secured with commercial-grade magnetic keypads and reinforced steel padlocks.

"Stand back," Agent Reynolds ordered, motioning for the tactical breacher to move forward with a heavy hydraulic ram.

With two thunderous impacts, the reinforced door buckled and tore free from its hinges, crashing onto the concrete floor inside.

A cloud of dust and the sharp, chemical smell of gun oil and cosmoline grease billowed out into the warm Texas air.

The interior was not a hobby workshop; it was a fully functional illicit military depot.

Floor-to-ceiling metal shelving units were packed with olive-drab crates bearing official Department of Defense tracking barcodes.

Agent Reynolds swept his flashlight across the labels, whistling through his teeth in disbelief.

"We have sixty-four sets of Gen-3 thermal imaging goggles, forty-two suppressed tactical upper receivers, and twelve crates of military-grade C4 demolition blocks."

"Every single serial number matches the missing shipments from the Red River Army Depot."

Beatrice stumbled into the doorway, staring in absolute revulsion at the mountain of contraband her son-in-law had harbored under her nose.

"He brought explosives... into my backyard?" Beatrice sobbed, looking at Kendra with tear-filled eyes.

"Where your niece and nephew play every single weekend?"

Kendra buried her face in her trembling hands, sinking to her knees in the driveway.

"I didn't know about the explosives, Mom... I swear I didn't know!"

"Bradley told me they were just surplus survival gear for preppers!"

"He told me we were going to make two million dollars and move to a mansion in Highland Park!"

I stepped into the workshop, my combat boots crunching over discarded zip-ties.

Behind a false drywall partition, I spotted a heavy fireproof floor safe.

"Reynolds, bring the thermal cutter," I instructed calmly.

"The offshore bank tokens and the forged power-of-attorney documents are inside that compartment."

Within three minutes, the torch cut through the reinforced steel door of the safe.

Inside lay stacks of bundled hundred-dollar bills, four fraudulent passports bearing Bradley’s photograph under false names, and the original deed to Beatrice’s suburban home.

Bradley hadn't just stolen the college fund.

He had secretly taken out a second mortgage on my mother's home, forging her signature while she was grieving my father's passing.
