Chapter 13 - The Final Submission

Two weeks later, the military tribunal at Fort Leavenworth concluded its deliberations in record time.

A panel of seven senior military officers found Bradley Vance guilty on all fourteen counts of treason, weapons trafficking, and aggravated fraud.

He was sentenced to fifty-two years of hard labor at the United States Disciplinary Barracks, stripped of all veteran benefits, and ordered to pay three million dollars in restitution.

The news broadcast the verdict nationwide, featuring footage of the disgraced supply clerk being led away in heavy leg irons.

Inside our living room, the television was switched off with a single click of the remote.

The dining table was covered with fresh barbecue ribs, homemade potato salad, and warm cornbread that Beatrice had spent all morning preparing.

We sat together as a whole family—Beatrice at the head of the table, Kendra beside her, and Lucas and Maya flanking my sides.

There were no sneering remarks.

There was no posturing or fake valor.

There was only the warm, healing laughter of people who had survived a storm and emerged stronger on the other side.

Beatrice raised her glass of sweet tea, her eyes shining with tears of joy.

"I want to propose a toast," Beatrice spoke, her voice clear and strong.

"To my late husband, who taught us to value truth above all else."

"To my grandson Lucas, who showed more courage than any grown man."

"And to my daughter Valerie—our protector, our hero, and the true heart of this family."

We clinked our glasses together, the sound echoing sweetly through the sunlit dining room.

Lucas smiled at me across the table, his bruises completely healed, his posture tall and confident.

"Pass the ribs, Major Mom," Lucas teased with a bright grin.

"Only if you clear your plate, Soldier," I replied with a wink.
