Chapter 7 - The Locked Workshop

The full scope of Bradley’s treachery laid bare on the concrete floor was breathtaking in its cruelty.

Special Agent Reynolds laid the recovered documents across a portable field table for General Vance and me to review.

"Look at this conveyance document, Major," Reynolds said, tapping a red-inked notary seal.

"Bradley used a corrupt notary in Dallas to transfer full ownership of your mother's property to an LLC named 'Apex Tactical Logistics.'"

"The moment the mortgage defaulted next month, the property would have been seized and auctioned off."

"Your mother would have been evicted onto the street with thirty days' notice, while Bradley fled to Costa Rica on his forged passport."

Beatrice let out a wail of pure agony, burying her face into her apron.

"I gave him a home when his own parents kicked him out," Beatrice wept.

"I cooked his meals, I washed his clothes, and I defended him every time he insulted my own children!"

"I called my own daughter an 'office worker' while this monster was plotting to throw me into a homeless shelter!"

Kendra crawled toward our mother, reaching out with desperate, manicured hands.

"Mom, please, I was trapped! Bradley threatened to ruin me if I spoke up!"

I turned toward my sister, my voice cutting through her excuses like a surgical blade.

"You weren't trapped, Kendra."

"You enjoyed the gold bracelets he bought you with Dad’s life insurance money."

"You laughed every time he pushed Lucas around on that mat because it made you feel superior."

"You chose his fake luxury over your own blood, and now you have to face the consequence of that choice."

Kendra looked away, unable to withstand the weight of my gaze.

Outside, two marked Texas Department of Public Safety cruisers pulled up behind the federal Suburbans, their red and blue strobe lights painting the oak trees in vivid flashes.

Sheriff Deputy Jackson, a longtime family friend who had served with my late father, stepped through the gate with his Stetson hat in hand.

"Valerie," Deputy Jackson said, nodding respectfully toward me and saluting General Vance.

"The federal prosecutor just signed the state warrants."

"We're seizing every vehicle, every bank account, and every asset tied to Bradley Vance and Apex Tactical Logistics."

"Your mother's house is legally protected under an emergency federal injunction."
