Chapter 2 - The Stolen Valor

Bradley lay flat on his back, his eyes bulging like boiled eggs as he fought to draw a single breath.
The smug crimson flush on his face had vanished, replaced by an ashen gray pallor.
Kendra dropped her paper cup onto the lawn, dark tea splashing across her white sandals.
My mother Beatrice froze with her plastic fork halfway to her mouth, her jaw hanging slack in disbelief.
"What... what did you just do?" Kendra gasped, scrambling out of her folding chair toward the mat.
"You tripped him! That was a cheap, dirty trick, Valerie!"
Bradley rolled onto his hands and knees, spitting a mouthful of saliva into the grass, his pride entirely shattered.
"You think that's funny, woman?" Bradley roared, his voice cracking into a high-pitched snarl.
He pushed himself to his feet, discarding the rules of backyard sparring entirely, his fists clenched with violent intent.
"I survived three years in the armed services, and I'm not getting clowned by an office clerk in front of my family!"
He lunged forward like a wounded bull, attempting to wrap his massive arms around my waist in a desperate street tackle.
I pivoted on my left heel, allowing his momentum to carry him past my centerline.
In one fluid motion, I captured his right wrist, spun into his shoulder, and applied a reinforced Kimura shoulder lock.
The leverage was absolute and merciless.
I forced him down onto his knees in the dirt, his arm pinned behind his shoulder blade at an agonizing ninety-degree angle.
"Let go! You're going to break my shoulder!" Bradley shrieked, tapping frantically against the grass with his free hand.
"Listen to me very carefully, Bradley," I whispered directly into his ear, my voice devoid of anger, colder than arctic ice.
"You were a supply clerk at Fort Hood who got discharged for failing your physical readiness tests and misplacing inventory."
"You have never seen combat, you have never cleared a building, and you will never lay a hand on my son again."
"If you ever speak to Lucas with disrespect, I won't use a sparring lock."
"I will dismantle you piece by piece."
I released the pressure with a sharp snap, pushing him forward onto his stomach.

Bradley clutched his shoulder, sobbing softly into the weeds as my daughter Maya cheered from the patio.
Before Kendra could scream another insult, the low, synchronized rumble of four heavy V8 engines vibrated through the suburban street.
