Chapter 14 - The Iron Hammer of Justice

With the stolen trust funds fully restored, we established the Hayes Memorial Youth Academy in our hometown.
The non-profit facility provided free athletic training, martial arts discipline, and academic tutoring for underprivileged kids and children of fallen military veterans.
Lucas became one of the primary junior instructors, teaching younger kids the fundamentals of respect, discipline, and self-defense.
Watching him guide eight-year-old boys and girls on the blue training mats was a sight that filled my heart to overflowing.
Kendra took over the administrative management of the academy, using her organizational skills to secure community grants and sponsorships.
She had traded her designer dresses for simple athletic wear, finding a genuine purpose in helping others rather than chasing empty status.
One Saturday afternoon, as I was wrapping up a sparring demonstration at the academy, a young Army recruiter walked through the double doors.
He carried a framed wooden shadow box sent directly from the Pentagon.
Inside the glass case were my original medals—the Silver Star, the Bronze Stars, and my master airborne jump wings—immaculately mounted against crimson velvet.
Below the medals was a brass plaque engraved with words from the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
“To Major Valerie Hayes: For valor in the shadows, and unyielding protection of the home front.”
Lucas walked over, his eyes wide as he traced his fingers across the polished brass.
"We're hanging this right in the main entrance, Mom," Lucas said proudly.
"So every kid who walks through these doors knows that real heroes don't brag."
"They just do what’s right."

I put my arm around my son’s shoulders, looking at the bright, bustling gym filled with laughter and positive energy.
"We'll hang it together, Lucas."
