Chapter 7 - The Hostile Boardroom

At precisely eleven-forty-five that morning, the grand oak-paneled library of the exclusive Chicago Union Club was filled with twenty-four of the city’s wealthiest corporate titans and syndicate elders. They sat around a sixty-foot mahogany conference table, sipping scotch and discussing the unprecedented power vacuum in Vance Global.
Julian Laurent stood at the head of the table in an impeccably tailored three-piece pinstripe suit, adjusting his gold cufflinks with smug arrogance. He placed a thick, red-bound legal binder onto the lectern, looking out over the assembled shareholders with a predatory smile.
“Gentlemen, Dominic Vance has suffered a complete psychological collapse following the desertion of his wife,” Julian announced, his voice smooth and persuasive. “He has conducted unauthorized armed assaults across private estates and paralyzed our European shipping operations.”
Several elderly board members nodded in grave agreement, terrified of the financial volatility threatening their offshore portfolios. Julian smiled inwardly, preparing to deliver the final stroke that would grant him absolute executive control over the thirty-billion-dollar empire.
“Under Section Fourteen of our sovereign bylaws, I move to declare Dominic Vance legally incapacitated and transfer all voting authority to Laurent Equity!” Julian declared, raising his golden fountain pen to initiate the signing. “We must protect our assets before the federal authorities freeze our domestic clearing accounts!”
Before the first board member could sign the parchment, the heavy, eight-foot oak doors of the library were blown inward with a deafening concussive explosion. Splintered wood and plaster dust rained down across the mahogany table as a dozen smoke canisters hissed across the Persian rugs.
A squad of ten federal tactical marshals swarmed into the room with drawn assault weapons, shouting commands and securing every exit. Walking behind the federal operators was Dominic Vance, his face set in stone, accompanied by Assistant United States Attorney Claire Montgomery.
The boardroom erupted into frantic shouting and sheer panic, executives scrambling out of their leather chairs with their hands raised. Julian Laurent stood paralyzed behind the lectern, the gold fountain pen slipping from his fingers and clattering onto the floor.
“Julian Laurent, under Federal Warrant 8821, you are under arrest for international racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit capital murder,” Prosecutor Montgomery announced in a voice that rang like steel. Two marshals stepped forward, pinning Julian against the table and twisting his arms behind his back with the sharp, metallic snap of handcuffs.

Dominic walked slowly to the head of the table, looking down at the trembling executives who had planned to betray his family. He took the red-bound corporate binder from the lectern, tore the proxy agreement in half, and tossed the scraps into the blazing fireplace.
“This board is officially dissolved,” Dominic announced to the room with absolute, terrifying finality. “And every dollar you thought you were stealing from my family has already been transferred to an untouchable trust three thousand miles away.”
